If activators give slime its life, then PVA (polyvinyl alcohol) is its very soul – the essential polymer that enables borax cross-linking.
Absolutely, you can make clear slime glue from PVA powder by dissolving 12–15 parts PVA powder in 100 parts deionized water. For clearer slime glue, use PVA 2499 and dissolve it at 90–100°C. For easier cold-water dissolving, PVA 2488 is a good choice.
💡 After reading this article, you will be able to:
There are so many types of PVA powder. Which one should we buy to make slime glue?
Slime glue affects the transparency and thickness of slime. If we want to make thick and clear slime, we can choose PVA 2488, PVA 2499, PVA 1788, or PVA 1799.
If you want more details about the effect of PVA on slime, you can read the following post.
For beginner slime makers, the best PVA powder is not simply the one with the highest alcoholysis degree. The most important factors are how easily the PVA dissolves, whether it creates bubbles, and whether it leaves cloudy particles in the glue.
In general, the beginner-friendly ranking for making clear slime is:
PVA 1788 > PVA 2488 > PVA 1799 > PVA 2499
| PVA Type | Beginner Level | Main Feature | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| PVA 1788 | Easiest | Easy to dissolve, medium viscosity, fewer cloudy particles | Beginners making clear slime |
| PVA 2488 | Medium | Thicker texture, more elastic, but more bubbles | Thick clear slime |
| PVA 1799 | Harder | Requires heating and full dissolution | Experienced makers |
| PVA 2499 | Hardest | Very thick, but easy to get haze or particles | Advanced users |
For beginners, PVA 1788 is usually the best PVA powder for making clear slime because it dissolves more easily, has moderate viscosity, and is less likely to create cloudy glue. PVA 2488 is better for thicker slime, while PVA 1799 and PVA 2499 require heating and are more suitable for experienced slime makers.

The solid content of PVA, or the concentration of PVA, is related to the clay and transparency of the produced slime glue, which ultimately affects the transparency and thickness of the slime.
💡 Solid content refers to the proportion or percentage of solid material present in a substance or mixture.
For slime glue, we recommend adding 12–15 g of PVA powder to 100 g of water. This gives a final PVA solid content of about 10.7%–13.0% by total solution weight.
Prepare 15g of PVA 2488 powder and pour it into 100g water in portions, stirring while adding.
Important!
PVA needs to absorb water and swell before dissolving. This stage is called PVA swelling. We need to slowly stir the solution for 30 minutes.
The picture below shows PVA swelling after absorbing water.
Important!
Stir slowly until the PVA particles are completely dissolved. The picture shows that the Slime Glue is full of bubbles due to stirring too fast.
Let it sit for about a day and wait for the bubbles in the slime glue to disappear before using it to make clear slime.
Easy-to-Activate Coated Clear Slime Glue
No glycerin needed. No extra contact solution needed. This self-coated clear slime glue is designed to activate easily with borax and create a smooth, holdable, mess-free slime. It gives your slime a soft, plump Korean clear texture with a slow stretch and satisfying bounce. Perfect for beginners, kids’ slime activities, and anyone who wants a cleaner slime-making experience.
If the transparency of slime made with PVA2488 is still not satisfactory to you, we need to choose PVA with an alcoholysis degree of 99% (higher) to make clear slime
Model 99 PVA is not soluble in cold water, so we need heating equipment to heat the water.
I use a water bath, but you can also use an induction cooker to heat the water.
💡This method of dissolving PVA powder is called water bath heating method.

Set the heating temperature at 95 °C. Different types of PVA have different temperature requirements. The PVA2499 used here needs to be dissolved in hot water between 90 °C and 100 °C.
Place the swollen PVA solution into the equipment and start heating while stirring slowly.
After heating to 95 °C, stir for about 30 minutes until the PVA powder is completely dissolved.
Important!
Let it sit for a while and wait for the bubbles to disappear. Then we can get a more transparent clear slime glue.
Normal clear glue is not suitable for activation with a high-concentration borax solution. The recommended concentration is:
2%-5%, that is:
PVA clumps when it is added too quickly or not stirred during dispersion. Add the powder slowly while stirring and allow enough swelling time.
Cloudiness may come from incomplete dissolution, low alcoholysis PVA, trapped bubbles, or using non-deionized water.
Fast stirring introduces air bubbles. Stir slowly and let the glue sit for 12–24 hours before use.
PVA 2499 requires hot water, usually 90–100°C. It also needs proper swelling before heating.
The borax solution may be too concentrated or added too quickly. Use 2%–5% borax solution and add it gradually.
Yes. PVA powder can be dissolved in water to make slime glue. The glue can then be activated with borax solution to make slime.
A common formula is 12–15 g PVA powder per 100 g water. Adjust the ratio depending on the desired thickness.
Yes. PVA 2499 usually needs to be dissolved at 90–100°C after proper swelling.
Deionized water reduces impurities and helps make clearer slime glue.
Let the glue rest for several hours or overnight until bubbles disappear.
